Evergreen Currant is a California native Ribes species known for its usefulness as a shade ground cover under oaks and deciduous trees. A sprawling shrub that can reach 3 to 4 feet high and 4 to 6 feet wide is functionally kept under three feet in the landscape with regular pruning. Its arching, dark red stems contrast beautifully with fragrant, deep green, glossy foliage that stands out in woodland understories. In early spring, it produces clusters of small, five-pointed, crimson red flowers that although are visible, do not stand out like many of the other native Ribes species. The fruit of this plant is edible.
Drought tolerant once established but will also take occasional water in the warmer months. Requires partial to full shade, especially inland. Tolerant of different soil types including heavy clay. Best in dry shade and useful for erosion control on dry slopes. Best established during the cooler months from October to March. The establishment failure rate is quite high, especially in inland areas during the summer months. We are a full service licensed plant nursery (B2915001).
